Busy busy busy
It's been a while since I last posted, and there's plenty of things abuzz in my head as of late. So, here's another list:
1) First with the bad news. M's dad was in a serious car accident this weekend. Luckily, he's okay. He might have some permanent damage to one arm, but other than that it sounds like he'll be alright. The wake-up call will hopefully be of the long-lasting variety, as he needs to improve his health in various ways. I wish him well...
2) The impact of No. 1 has caused me to do a whole lot of thinking. Well, that combined with the fact that I just finished editing a book that's basically about not taking life--or the people you choose to spend it with--for granted. It's a tired, ageless criticism that we all can probably make about ourselves, but it's never the less true. (That's why it's ageless.) My pops is going to be 72 in August, and I hope to spend some quality time with him in the coming years. We've always struggled with such matters, attempting to find some sort of a meaningful connection but ultimately coming up empty. Maybe it's time to reconsider "the book", as some of you know about.
3) The NBA Draft is just six days away. I'm nervous, as several Illini have a chance of being drafted. Deron Williams should go in the top 5, maybe even the top 3. He recently had a private head-to-head workout with Tar Heel guard Raymond Felton, and supposedly Williams had the upper hand. If he goes fourth or better, he'll be the highest draft pick in Illini history. Do you know who he'll be besting?
4) In other Illini news, they received a commitment from Proviso East's Brian Carwell this week. The 6'10" big man is considered an athletic beast who right now has a defensive game that's far ahead of his offensive game. Regardless, he's ranked in the Top 50 of the 2006 class, so it's a good get for Weber and takes some of the sting out of losing fellow Chicago prep star Jon Scheyer to Duke. I'm all for the big guys Illinois seems adept at landing, but I'm ready to rope in some talented guards. This year's team showed that good guard play can take you a hell of a long way in the tourney, and once Dee leaves our guard play looks to take a huge step back. Brandon Rush, brother of former L.A. Laker/current Charlotte Bobcat Kareem Rush, pulled out of the NBA draft yesterday. The high school graduate presumably has qualified for college and is going to decide between Illinois and Oklahoma. Dee Brown's return is a good sign for our chances of landing the 6'5" small forward. Most think he's a one-and-done, but I'll gladly rent his services for a season. His arrival would give next year's team surprising depth to counter its lack of experience.
5) I made M's dad a country mix for Father's Day. He'll now have plenty of time to enjoy the mix while he's on the mend. It's the second country mix I've made for someone, and I think it turned out well (although track 5 might be considered in poor taste post-accident). He listens to so much bad, modern country; M and I wanted to give him a taste of the good stuff--both old and new. I stuck to the tried and true:
6) I've also been downloading a ton of great found-sound stuff from the web for my radio show. It's amazing what's out there if you dig for it. I can't wait to get back to my parent's so that I can borrow their suitcase full of Amway motivational tapes. They have hours upon hours of speakers recorded from various Amway conventions. These tapes used to arrive regularly, as if my parents belonged to a tape-of-the-month club. I suppose that's how those triangle schemes keep you hooked.
7) I had to get a tetanus shot on Monday as part of a regular physical. The doctor asked me when the last time was that I had been given a shot. I couldn't recall, although I'm sure I was a kid. Anyway, this particular shot sucks; my right shoulder has been sore for two days. I can't lift my right arm much higher than 45 degrees without it hurting. I guess I'll be happy, though, if I ever impale myself on a rusted lawn jart. Someone told me lawn jarts (or darts, if you prefer) are illegal now, but a quick google search turns up several lawn jart tournaments around the country. I was pretty good myself as a youngster.
8) Speaking of lawn games, I'm ready for a summer barbeque featuring some bocce ball, followed by some kickball. Who's with me?

Somehow, blogger deleted part of our blog template, so nothing was displaying properly. It's fixable, but Jon has the info to do it. He's moving his wife back from Denver this weekend. So, it's not going to be fixed until Monday, probably.
