This week in DOUG

Things that I dislike this week:

1) Japanese beetles, which are eating all the vegies in M's garden and also showing up in our bedroom. Hmmm...

2) Standing in the sun. My god was it hot at the Intonation Music Festival. It hit 95 on Day 2. The only thing hotter than last weekend is this weekend.

3) Dungen's guitar amp fucking up their Intonation set to a degree. They were still great though, who am I kidding? Long live flute solos! (Geesh, never thought I'd say that.)

4) The life of former Purdue basketball coach Gene Keady. It's amazing that some people pretend to find the lives of average Joes who just happen to be athletes (or coach them) to be interesting simply because they are athletes (or coach them).

5) Fundraising. I really wish that someone would just donate $50,000 to WRFU so that we could get this thing up and running already.

6) Paying the power bill in the summer. Thanks to clunky window a/c units, it runs $85 on average from June through August. I know that I shouldn't bitch, because due to the cost of steam heat being included in my rent, my power bill is only $30 for the rest of the year.

7) Playstation Jeopardy. I never seem to be able to buzz in as fast as M, who knows all the answers anyway. She kicks my butt routinely, and yes, that bothers me.

8) Saving money for a summer vacation. This Friday, Olivia Tremor Control is playing in Chicago with the fucking Tall Dwarfs -- and I could be there if it wasn't for this pending vacation. Here I go again taking for granted the fact that I just spent an entire weekend in front of a stage.

9) The Cardinals losing a game to the Cubs. Sure, they won Game 1 of the series in dramatic fashion on a suicide squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 11th inning. But, they dropped Game 2 thanks to Matt "Homerun" Morris reverting to last year's form and giving up three gopher balls. Game 3 is tonight, and Suppan is pitching against Prior, which doesn't bode well for our chances of taking the series.

10) On that same note, Derrek Lee. Stop hitting already! For fuck's sake, it's tacky!

And now, some songs that I've been spinning lately to tide you over till next week:

Sufjan Stevens, "Decatur, or, Round of Applause for Your Stepmother!"
From his new record, Come on Feel the Illinoise, which features plenty of good tunes. I chose this one simply because of the subject matter's proximity to me in Champaign-Urbana.

The Outsiders, "Happyville"
These dudes from Netherlands are featured on the second Nuggets box. I was a little taken aback at just how good their 1968 album C.Q. is. This song -- which I swear I've heard before -- is among the more rockin' highlights.

Doleful Lions, "Satanic Blood"
From their new album, Shaded Lodge and Mausoleum, on Parasol. It's been a while since I've listened to the Doleful Lions, probably not since this post. However, I finally got around to listening to the promo of their new disc, and it's quite good. This number features a classic Magnetic Fields percussion sound and is the most upbeat number on the record. Doleful Lions are opening for Unbunny on Tuesday at Parasol. Yay!

Gary Higgins, "I Can't Sleep at Night"
Beard folk before beard folk meant anything. Drag City just reissued this 1973 freak folk classic, Red Hash, which is pretty fucking good. This particular one reminds me of Iron & Wine just a little.
